Being a stay-at-home Mum AND running a business is challenging!
I became a Mum in October 2015 and (like many babies) my little darling really struggled with sleep. There was no structure, every day was different.
I love working from home, and I’m pretty self motivated. But when I became a Mum, I increasingly felt scattered, unproductive, and torn between wanting to nap when she finally gave in to sleep (that option won, quite a lot)… or pick up my laptop and get to work.
After about 6 months, I felt restless to get back to work, but it felt like I was pushing water uphill.
When Ava was around 6 months old, we decided to sleep train and life got a LOT brighter. Her sleep patterns were more predictable, and routine was no longer a foreign word. The fog was finally lifting, I felt calmer and more in control of my life.
I’ve realised I’m better when I work. I’m a better wife and Mum when I have goals, when I pursue my passions, and I’m working on my business.
At the moment I have 2 nap times (1.5 hours each) during the day, and then after Ava goes to bed at 7pm for work.
I wrote a blog post a few years ago over on my photography blog that detailed my ideal day. Below is the updated ‘Mum life’ version.
I hope this helps some of you out there! Remember, every baby is different and your schedule might look quite different. This schedule below gets shifted depending on when Ava wakes up in the morning/how tired she may or may not be, but this is the general routine.
Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely days where no work gets done, and I’m fine with relaxing on the couch, drinking coffee and watching YouTube. It’s all about balance isn’t it?
7.00am – Wake Up!
7.20am – Breakfast with family
8.00am – Walk to work with Sam, stop by playground.
10.00am – Morning snack
10.30am – Ava’s first nap
10.35am – Shower, coffee, reading (quiet time), journal, prayer.
11.00am – Get to work!
12.00pm – Ava wakes up. Lunch.
12.30pm – Meet with friends/get outside/library.
3.00pm – Ava’s second nap
3.05pm – Work or relax on the couch…sometimes a bit of both
4.30pm – Ava wakes, afternoon snack.
4.30pm – Play at home, get started on dinner.
6.00pm – Ava’s dinner
6.20pm – Sam gets home, bathes Ava.
6.30pm – Bedtime stories with Dad, then bed!
7.00pm – Sam and I eat dinner.
7.30pm – We try and work about x3 nights of the week, otherwise we read, and on Friday’s we pop popcorn and watch a movie together.
9.30/10pm – BED!
If you’re a Mum Boss, I’d love to hear how you get things done. Do you have any tips to share? I’d love to hear from you in the comments xx
